The Last Day on Earth

YYH (c) Togashi/Jump/Studio Pierrot. The Last Day on Earth is a song by Marilyn Manson, and therefore belongs to him, not me. Since I was too lazy to look up lyrics for the song, I had to do it from memory. More than likely, the lyrics are a little rearranged. I know I ommited at least one line. I'll eventually go back and fix the errors... someday.

Yesterday was a million years ago
In all my past lives I played an asshole

Yusuke felt his way through the pitch black corridor, his eyes squinting to see in front of him. Even his Mazoku form's heightened senses were of little help to him. Following behind him were his two closest friends, and comrades. Kuwabara stayed behind Yusuke, in order to keep Kurama between them. Yusuke held onto Kurama's hand as they walked in the darkness, using his other hand to feel the wall against him as his only guide to the exit. Kurama was hand was clammy and shaking, but he held onto it tightly and led the half-yoko through the corridor.

He grimaced at the thought of just what was making Kurama so apprehensive. Over fifty years before, one lone youkai gained enough power to kill a ruler of the Makai. He ruled over his fallen benefactress' territory, and soon went on to conquer the entire Makai. He then set his sights on the Rekai. When the Rekai was crushed, he finally moved on to the Ningenkai.

Most of the world's human population was dead or in slavery. Youkai ran free over the remains of the Ningenkai. His family and all his friends save the two that followed him silently, were long dead.

Ironically, all of his suffering was at the hands of his one-time friend and ally. Hiei.

He had heard that a strange artifact had been unearthed in Mukuro's territory. However, not a single youkai had been able to figure out what it was, or what it's purpose had been. He often wondered if Hiei had accidentally activated it without knowing the consequence of his actions, or if he had done it knowing exactly what he would become.

Apparently, the artifact granted the user immortality. Not just the longevity of any given youkai, but actual, complete immortality. Not to mention drastically improved senses, speed, stamina and power. As Hiei had coldly informed him, the night he and Kuwabara retrieved Kurama from Hiei's citadel, he was for all intents and purposes, a god.

He had heard the phrase somewhere that "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Truer words had never been spoken. Within one single night, Hiei's personality completely changed. It made his old distant demeanor look as if it were on par with his sister's gentle nature.

Kurama was still shaking, so he stopped and turned towards the redhead. He felt around till his hand wrapped around Kurama's neck. He pulled his face forward and softly kissed him before turning to move on.

Now I found you, it's almost too late
And this earth seems obliviating

Whatever Hiei had done to Kurama during the time he held Kurama as his prisoner, had done untold damage. Kurama had never quite been the same. He rarely spoke, only ate when Kuwabara and he nagged at him. He never slept without nightmares. Not only that, but he had lost a great deal of power. He couldn't transform into the Yoko, and his youki was far weaker than it had once been. He never had found out just what went on during those three years. He wasn't completely sure he wanted to know.

He had been so lonely ever since the day Hiei sent his troops to the Ningenkai. All save he and Kuwabara died in the first wave of attack. Of course, he still had Kuwabara, but he still missed his mother, Genkai-basaan ... and especially Keiko. Besides that, after Hiei personally executed the entire race of koorime, including his sister, Kuwabara had one goal, and one goal alone. Revenge for Yukina. He was almost as bad as Kurama when it came to staying quiet. Hard to believe they at one time had been carefree children. But they were no longer children. It pained him these days to look at Kuwabara's aging face and graying hair. He and Kurama remained untouched by age, but watching it in Kuwabara reminded him that soon he'd lose another companion.

I'm so empty here without you
I crack my Xerox hands

In the middle of all the bloodshed, fighting and running, something happened to him. Perhaps it was simply because they spent so much time with only each other as company. He found himself falling in love with Kurama. At first, he ignored it, trying to think only of Keiko. But she was dead. And Kurama wasn't. One night, while Kuwabara was on reconnaissance, he came across Kurama bathing in the lake they were camping by. His feet moved of their own volition, and he waded into the water. Kurama turned and watched him silently. When Yusuke wrapped an arm around Kurama's waist, he didn't protest. He simply smiled sadly and leaned forward and kissed him.

Kurama didn't love him. Despite everything, he still held a torch for Hiei. He was completely mystified by it. After all, they had once been friends, and now he hated Hiei with every bit of his soul. It didn't matter though that Kurama didn't love him. He knew that Kurama at least cared for him. And that was good enough.

I know it's the last day on earth
We'll be together while the planet dies
I know it's the last day on earth
We'll never say goodbye

"Urameshi. We're here." Kuwabara said, cutting off Yusuke's thoughts. They stopped before a double doorway. On the doors were elaborate carvings depicting three eyed creatures, looking much like Hiei in his Majin form, devouring human body parts. They were in front of the doorway to Hiei's personal chambers. He nodded at Kuwabara and pulled Kurama behind him. Kurama stared blankly ahead, with no emotion on his face.

"We'll probably die here, Urameshi." Kuwabara remarked and flashed a smirk.

"Well, it doesn't matter anyway. We'll die today no matter what. He's going to destroy what's left of all three worlds in less than an hour. At least we might take the bastard with us." Yusuke replied and unsheathed a sword from the scabbard strapped to his back. Over the years he had learned to depend on the weapon, rather than the Rei Gun, as it had proved completely useless against Hiei the night he freed Kurama. He and Kuwabara glanced at each other, and in unison, kicked the doors open.

The dogs slaughter each other softly
Love burns its casualties

Kurama paled even more as he looked around the familiar room. He had been an unwilling guest of Hiei's far too long. The room was dark, only one candle for illumination. In the middle of the room was a large bed with black sheets. Human and youkai skeletons littered the floor. At the foot of the bed, Hiei sat, with a strange cross between a sneer and a smirk on his face, the jagan glowing a sickly green color. He stood up slowly and telepathically willed his sword to come to him from across the room.

Yusuke had always wondered just how old Hiei had been when they first met. He had been so short and youthful looking, but acted so old. Apparently, in body, he had been little more than a child, perhaps the youkai equivalent of a teenager. For he had grown. He was now several inches taller than Yusuke, and a bit more muscular. His hair was as long as Yusuke's and pulled into a messy ponytail.

"I had a vision last night. The jagan told me you would be coming here. I didn't need it to tell me that I would kill you. I know I will." He said calmly. His eyes flickered to Kurama, and then down to where Kurama's and Yusuke's hands were clasped together.

"Well, well. You'll latch onto anything won't you?" He said in a dark tone and glared icily at Kurama. "Of course I shouldn't be surprised by that. You did let me fuck you. And I think we all agree I'm far from a model human being." He laughed in a bitter tone.

"Shut up, asshole! We're here to fight, not talk!" Kuwabara growled and formed the rei ken.

"Hn. I didn't recognize you, oaf. You've gotten old and withered. I'm sure Yukina is thankful that I spared her the grief of marrying a pathetic fuck like you." Hiei shot back and glared cruelly at Kuwabara.

"DON'T YOU EVER SAY HER NAME!" Kuwabara roared and lunged towards Hiei.

"Yukina. Yukiiiina. Yukiiiiiiiiiina." Hiei mocked as he easily evaded Kuwabara's wild lunges.

"He ain't your only opponent!" Yusuke screamed and shot towards Hiei. He managed to land a kick square in the middle of Hiei's face, but Hiei didn't even blink. He began to laugh maniacally and without any effort, grabbed the rei ken from Kuwabara's hand. Yusuke screamed for Kuwabara to move, but it was too late. In one, lightning fast swing of his arm, he sliced Kuwabara's neck. Yusuke watched in horror as Kuwabara's head fell from his body and hit the floor with a sickening thud.

"KUWABARA!!!!!!" He screamed, drowning out Hiei's laughter.

"Don't worry. You'll join him soon." Hiei cackled and disarmed Yusuke. A wave of despair hit him as he watched his sword fly through the air and land on the other side of the room, behind Hiei. Hiei smirked and punched him swiftly in the stomach. Yusuke dropped to the ground, but Hiei grabbed him by his hair and held him up. "If you want a last look at your little whore, you better do it now."

Yusuke spit on him. He watched the mixture of blood and saliva hit hiei directly in the jagan. If he had the energy, he would have laughed. Hiei roared and swung his sword.

It was strangely silent the moment the sword punched through him. He instantly knew it was mortal. He felt oddly at peace. It was almost over. Hiei dropped him, and he managed to turn his head enough so that he could see Kurama, who during the whole fight stood against the doorway. Tears streamed down his face, but he said nothing.

I'm so empty here without you
I know they want me dead

"Ku...ra...ma..." Yusuke whispered and coughed violently. Kurama slowly walked towards him and kneeled beside him. He pulled Yusuke into his arms and cradled him like one would a child.

"I tried..." Yusuke whispered.

"I know." Kurama replied softly.

"I... lo..ve...y--" Yusuke coughed. And then he died.

Hiei watched with an amused, and rather mad gleam in his eyes as Kurama carefully set Yusuke's body on the floor and stood to face him.

"Did you love him, Kurama?" He asked with a warped version of a smile.

"No." Kurama said, his voice devoid of all emotion.

Hiei's grin widened. "It's begun you know. Within a few hours, you and I will be the last living youkai on earth. This world is dead."

Kurama said nothing. He stared at Hiei with a vacant expression. Hiei laughed and pulled Kurama towards him for a rough kiss.

"Yes, Kurama. Retreat into your own little world, because I have no intention of ever letting you go. You and I will live forever."

I know it’s the last day on earth
We'll be together while the planet dies
I know it’s the last day on earth
We'll never say goodbye

Owari.
