The two boys just stood there, looking at each other.
"I never thought I would see this moment in Joe Hardy's life!" Frank commented with a chuckle. The resemblance was striking, but Frank was able to get over his shock a little faster than his little brother. By then, Joe and Adam were both looking at him for an explanation.
"What is that?" Joe finally smarted back with a smirk.
"Joe Hardy--- SPEECHLESS!" Frank said, almost laughing the words out. Fenton also had to laugh at his son's comment. Carl just joined in with the laughter.
"Well since it seems that our company here can not make proper introductions," Joe said, looking over at his father and brother. "Let me be the gentleman."
Frank really started to chuckle. "Gent... le...man!" He sputtered. Joe just glared at Frank and continued.
"My name is Joe Hardy," Joe said as he extended his hand to Adam. Adam took his hand and shook it with a smile.
"Adam Kramer."
"Nice to meet you. Looking forward to spending a few days in sunny southern California," Joe said. "Sure is better than being back east right now."
"My brother and I are going to try to show you around a little," Adam replied.
"Great!" Joe exclaimed with enthusiasm.
"We had better get going. Laura is probably tapping her toes at us as we speak!" Carl remarked. Laura Kramer loved for things to be on time. Joe and Frank looked at him with a weird look at first. "I am sorry boys, I forgot. My Laura, that is." Both boys smiled broadly. Frank was too busy thinking over things. This was going to be an interesting visit. They were going to stay at the house of an investigator that worked for the state and whom had a wife named Laura. The two boys investigate cases just like we do and are the same ages as we are and have the same basic looks that we have...too weird! I just have to wonder what will their mother and the other boy look like! Frank was so into his thoughts that he did not notice that Adam and Joe were lagging behind the rest of the group. Adam offered to help Joe with the other large bag, for which Joe was truly grateful for the helping hand.
"So do you surf?" Joe asked Adam.
"Yeah, do you?"
"Try to when I have time. What else do you guys do for fun around here?"
"Well... we go cruisin' sometimes. Then we hang out at the pier or at each other's houses. Chuck is having a barn dance this weekend and he has already invited you and your brother to come along to meet some of the locals," Adam rambled on. "Then we also drag race sometimes, goof around playing football, go to the lake with our girlfriends, or we just find things to do."
"That's all?" Joe quipped before thinking. He was used to a bigger set of choices since Bayport was a pretty good-sized town with New York not being too far away.
Adam looked over at him. "Emerald Beach IS a small town, you know."
Joe gave him a sheepish grin and changed the subject.
"So, this brother of yours, what is he like?" Joe asked.
"He is okay. He is the brainy one. Doesn't like to take too many risks," Adam said, trying to think of some words to describe Jason. "But Jason is super cool though in his own way. What is Frank like?"
"Quiet, smart, over-bearing sometimes," Joe commented. Adam nodded at the mention of "over-bearing". If only Joe knew how much Jason breathed down his own neck! "But he is a great partner."
"Sounds something like Jason. But I just ignore him sometimes and I do what I want any ways. I am seventeen, it is not like he is my father or something," Adam shrugged. Joe looked over at Adam. That was something that Joe rarely did, but maybe he needed to start trying it out.
The group was almost to the car when Joe finally spoke up again. "Hey, um, Adam?"
"Yeah?"
"I do have one question about Jason that I just have to know."
"What?"
"Please tell me he does not look like Frank."
Adam chuckled and then looked over at Joe. "No my dear friend, we are the only misplaced brothers here." Both boys shared a laugh, causing Frank to come out of his deep thoughts and stare at them quizzically. After loading up the car, the three boys piled in the back while Fenton and Carl took the front area. Soon the small group was on their way to their new home away from home.
When they first arrived at the Kramer house, Adam immediately noticed that his Trans Am had been moved.
"Is that your car!" Joe remarked spotting the older Trans Am that Adam had fully restored.
"Just finished restoring it myself," Adam replied.
"Whose van?" Frank asked, spotting an older blue GMC van with a moonlight desert picture on the side.
"That is the van that we shared for a while. We still do, but mostly Jason drives it now," Adam answered.
"We have a black van that we share. It has all of this gadgetry stuff in it and we even had it bullet proofed," Frank pointed out.
"That is just a typical van sitting there. So I would not suggest you getting into any gun fights with it," Adam laughed.
Soon the guests and the Kramer men were unloading the car and making their way up to the back deck of the house. They were almost at the top when a lady with very light brown hair and many blond highlights came busting through the door. Her long hair blew in the slight breeze and her smile radiated with great excitement.
Frank looked up out of pure curiosity. After seeing how much Adam and Joe looked alike, he had to see if their mothers looked alike as well. While there was a lot of resemblance, they did not look alike as much as the boys did. But Laura Hardy and Laura Kramer could easily pass for sisters. Laura spotted the young man looking up at her and she smiled back. Frank all of a sudden missed his own mother, who stayed back in Bayport with their Aunt Gertrude.
"Welcome! We have been anxiously waiting for your visit!" Laura Kramer said as she greeted her guests. Fenton reached over and gave her a small peck on the cheek. Frank gave her a small hug. Then Carl came up the steps followed by Joe. Laura gave her husband an affectionate small kiss and went to greet her son. Just as she was about to say "Adam", she caught herself. She stepped back to see if her eyes were deceiving her.
'Oh my! Since you are not Adam, you must be Joseph!" Laura said, hugging the boy. Joe hated being called "Joseph", but for some reason it was okay if she called him that. He greeted her warmly and continued to follow the rest of the group into the house.
"My goodness, I didn't think the world could handle two of your types," Laura whispered to Adam with a grin.
The group was led immediately to their rooms so they could set their baggage down. Fenton was going to stay in the guestroom. Frank and Joe would share Jason's bedroom complete with a fold up bed that Laura borrowed from the university. Adam and Jason would share Adam's double sized bed. Jason was not too crazy about it, but Laura was only able to get one fold up bed.
After showing their guests their rooms, the group met downstairs after the luggage was simply dropped on the floor. Adam did not even notice Alyssa sitting on the couch until he came down the steps after dropping off the Hardys' large suitcase. He immediately went over and greeted her warmly and took a seat beside her. The Hardys took a seat on the other couch while Fenton took his usual chair in his recliner. Laura sat down on the arm of the recliner next to her husband while Jason flopped down next to Adam.
"Oh my," Alyssa whispered when she got a good look at the blond boy who looked almost identical to her boyfriend. Jason heard her gasp and looked over. His eyes locked on the image of his brother.
"Hi, I guess you have discovered what we discovered at the airport," Joe finally spoke after noticing the awkward stares from the two teenagers. The rest of the group laughed.
'Well, this is my wife Laura. She is an archeologist and teaches some classes at San Diego State," Carl said as he started the introductions. "This is my oldest son Jason and the little lady on the other side of Adam there is Alyssa Clarke, Adam's girlfriend."
The Hardys smiled to greet the three new faces. Frank was relieved to see that Jason was not his "twin" so to say. Joe was too busy looking at Alyssa. So many things reminded him of Iola Morton, his own girlfriend back home. The long hair, the eyes and that spark of life. Iola had black hair and a pixie faced complexion, but he had never saw any other girl with that same spark in her eyes until he met Alyssa.
"This is Fenton and his sons Frank and Joe," Carl said, pointing to the three Hardy men.
"I hope you enjoy your short stay here and if there is anything you need, let us know," Laura added as she went into the kitchen area to check on lunch.
The group was about to start into small talk when they heard Laura call out. "Hey everyone, it seems that the spaghetti is finished! Everyone head to the table if you expect to be fed!'
"Wow! Spaghetti for lunch!" Joe pointed out.
"Trust me, this is not a normal lunch for us. Usually bologna sandwiches and chips," Jason replied.
"Jason Kramer! Just for that, you can help me carry the food in," he heard his mother's voice boom back. Grinning sheepishly, the older Kramer boy went into the kitchen to help his mother. Since the dining room table had bench seats, it was able to seat three people on each side with two at either ends of the table. That was one thing that Laura always insisted on, a dining room table that had bench style seating like her own mother's table. Frank, Joe and Fenton sat on one side while Carl took a seat at the end of the table.
"Need help son?" Carl called out.
"I got her dad," Adam called out. It was then that Frank and Joe noticed that Alyssa had not got up with the rest of the group. They both looked back to see Adam cradling her in his arms and carrying her to the table. Frank caught sight of something that shimmered from under her jeans. Something metal, like a silverish color.
"Now that is service! I hope Iola doesn't get any ideas like that!" Joe said with a grin. Frank jabbed him in the side and shot him a glance. Evidently Joe had not seen the same thing he had seen. Adam looked over at Joe with a look as he sat Alyssa down on the bench and walked back to the living room area. Alyssa just smiled and tried to hide her slight embarrassment.
Then Joe's eyes met another sight. There in Adam's hands was a set of braces. The type of braces that a paraplegic wore on their upper arms to help them walk. Joe's stomach fell and he just wanted to hide under the table and never come out. No wonder Adam shot me a look! His girlfriend can't walk!
This is going to be a long four days! Joe Hardy thought to himself. Only here for a few minutes and you insult his girlfriend. Good one there Joe!
